Closet Staples for Working Women

Working Woman Staples…
This is a topic that is often discussed  when someone is returning to work, starting a new career or just plain and simple needs/wants  to update their wardrobe. The answer that you receive may change slightly depending upon your career field/work environment but in large should be consistent. When building your work wardrobe, invest in quality basics.  Investing in quality basics will provide pieces that stand the test of time. You want your wardrobe foundation to maintain color, shape and general style. Paying for higher quality basics may feel like more money at first however,  you will be able to wear the items more often and keep them in your wardrobe longer.
My top 6 must haves are…
Black Pants – wear to work with a blouse, pumps and conservative accessories; dress up  for a night out with friends  by adding a high heel, trendy top and statement jewelry;  dress down with modest pump or flats and a cute cardigan or even a simple fitted t-shirt…
Black Skirt – easy to wear year round and dress up or down; use combinations similar to the black pants; remember to wear tights for warmth and elongation during the cold months; bare legs and cute tops in the warmer months can create a  perfect evening out look…
Neutral Blazer/Cardigan – a versatile topper is a must;  the cardigan or blazer can be worn to create a more polished look, add it to a pair of jeans to create a business appropriate “jeans day” work ensemble;  wear it with pants, a skirt or a dress to win the crowd over when giving an important presentation at work; remember to go with a neutral color and fairly conservative style to get the most wear for your money…

White/Ivory Blouse – again this item can be worn numerous ways, the accompanying bottom, shoes and accessories will determine the purpose of the blouse as a part of the ensemble; unbuttoned and over another shirt/turtleneck, etc…, under a blazer and with pants/skirt when preparing for an interview, critical presentation or important meeting; belt it, wear statement jewelry, tie it at the hip to create a completely different look and feel… endless possibilities…

Conservative Jeans – key word is conservative, stay away from the bedazzled, ripped/torn, skinny trendy jeans (there is a time and place for those…just not with your basics); find a pair that fits and flatters your shape and style; if necessary have them tailored to create that perfect fit; you can dress them up for Jeans day at work by pairing a blazer or cardigan; you can spice them up for a night out with the girls; of course running errands with a cute flat or sneaker and fitted “t” is an option too…

Little Black Dress – a must have staple piece, do not pass go unless you have this item; this too is an extremely versatile item when selected appropriately; dress it up or down, wear it out on the town or to work; add layers of clothing or just go with the simple elegance of the dress; you will only impress with this item when you select the perfect dress cut and made for you…!

5 things to remember when shopping with a defined budget and limited time…

I recently heard from a FB friend regarding planning a purposeful shopping trip. This friend mentioned that they have a specific budget and only a couple of hours to use spending it. I offered the following tips to create a successful shopping experience!
1.     Define your purpose for shopping. What do you hope to purchase? When you have focus before taking action, you are more likely to be successful. Create a list of items that you need and list of wants. Once you find your needs, you can then move on to your wants (time permitting).
2.     Quickly assess the stores near you. If your budget is $200 and your local stores have prices which begin at $75 per item; this is probably not the store for you given your budget. When assessing, also make sure the store carries the type of clothing you need.  Do not go to the hot trendy spot if you need foundation/staple pieces for your wardrobe.
3.     Try to determine the styles and colors that are most flattering for your shape prior to shopping. This is HUGE time saver. You should style try things when shopping to confirm a good fit. Knowing what looks good on you, will reduce the number of things to try and reduce the level of frustration resulting from trying on things that are not right for your shape.
4.    Remember quality is most important. Just because something is on sale does not mean it is a must buy piece. You want items that fit, are flattering and made to be worn several times.  If you have to pay an extra few dollars to achieve these things, it is okay. You will recoup your investment with the number of times you are able to wear the clothing.
5.     If you can, take an honest friend…lol. Seriously, take someone with you who will honestly tell you when something looks fabulous or not.

Personal Style at Work

Oh the joys of balancing personal style with the constraints of a conservative work environment.  Ok, you are right… this sounds like a personal problem. It is… and one I believe I share with many…lol. So, I am going to write about it.
Why should we have to check our style at the door when coming to work? In all honesty, I agree that work appropriate clothes should be worn BUT I wish infusing color and a little drama with the sometimes boring and lifeless hues of navy blue, grey, brown, tan and black would be more accepted.
Long story short, don’t commit career suicide or make a spectacle of yourself. Rather start with your basics and find one lively accessory that best presents your personal style and work it! This is also a great way to spice up your commonly worn business casual attire. Pick one accessory that is within your budget and add it your ensemble.

I am a shoe nut and I typically add a pair of dramatic shoes to my ensemble. You can do the same thing with scarves, earrings, necklaces, rings, etc. For instance earrings are easy on the budget and great on the eye.  They will instantly bring focus to your face and they can be worn with a variety of outfits.  Scarves are another great option for many of the same reasons.
Most importantly wear something that compliments your style and that is comfortable. I always say confidence is the best accessory! Be true to you…;-).

What should I wear if I have a pear shape?

What should I wear if I have a pear shape?
Okay so let’s start with the basics. What is a pear shape or also know as a triangle shape. Women with a pear/triangle shape usually have larger hip measurements when compared to their waist and chest.

Here are a couple of well known celebrities who have a pear shape.

If you have this curvy and vivacious shape, you should consider the following tips and items.
1.  Draw the eye upward by wearing noticeable jewelry and girly/romantic pieces. Try statement necklaces, ruffles and scarves.
2.   Wear solids and darker colors on the bottom half. Try boot cut or wider leg pants. This will help balance your silhouette and create a longer leaner bottom half.
3.   Consider a line skirts and dresses. Pencil and biased cut skirts can create unwanted attention.
4.   Stay away from boxy clothing as this will add weight to your figure and hide your curves.
5.   Consider wearing heels to add length and height.
6.   Don’t be afraid of tops which accent your small waist.
7.   Most importantly have your clothes tailored to fit your curves.
Finally...stop, look, love and celebrate your curves!

Flattering Styles for Full Figured Women...Talk to Me Tues. Question Answered!

What are flattering styles and casual styles for plus size women …
Okay, you might not like my answer to this one but it is the truth….IT DEPENDS…seriously. Flattering styles are very dependent on a person’s body shape. This is why I say it depends. So below are 5 general and sincere tips from styling experiences.

1.Discover your body shape and understand the type of clothes and accessories that flatter your shape. There are 6 different shapes (triangle, inverted triangle, rectangle, hourglass, diamond and rounded). Once you know your shape, flattering it is easy!

2.Do not focus on the size of clothing but rather the fit and comfort (not too loose or tight). Try on your clothing when shopping. OR take your items home and try them on only if you will take them back if they are not the right fit for you. Getting dressed in the morning is SO much easier and more enjoyable when you are able to choose from clothing that fits and is flattering.

3.Be selective with the fabrics you choose. Heavier fabrics tend to add weight (chunky sweaters, sweats, etc..). Do not be afraid to wear fabrics which rest against your curves. You are getting dressed not hiding out for the day! Let the world know that you are a woman and can embrace your curves like the rest!

4.Choose colors and patterns wisely. Dark colors tend to slim and light colors may emphasize or exaggerate. Monochromatic combos with a pop of color are very sleek and chic. Prints worn strategically can highlight your assets and distract from personal challenges.

5.ACCESSORIZE! Accessories are your styling “ bff”. A belt placed in the right area highlights your smaller waist line. A necklace or a pair of impressive earrings will bring attention to your face and away from challenging areas. Let’s not forget shoes. A pair of heels always lengthens you by adding height.

Okay, so now you have all of these words and are probably wondering what this looks like on a real person. Check it out below.

Before I leave… please remember regardless of your size and/style…remember to STOP (spend a little me time), LOOK (take inventory of you) and LOVE YOU (embrace your authentic self). Self acceptance and love is the most beautiful style any woman can ever wear and pass on!!!!
