Working Woman Staples…
This is a topic that is often discussed when someone is returning to work, starting a new career or just plain and simple needs/wants to update their wardrobe. The answer that you receive may change slightly depending upon your career field/work environment but in large should be consistent. When building your work wardrobe, invest in quality basics. Investing in quality basics will provide pieces that stand the test of time. You want your wardrobe foundation to maintain color, shape and general style. Paying for higher quality basics may feel like more money at first however, you will be able to wear the items more often and keep them in your wardrobe longer.
My top 6 must haves are…
Black Pants – wear to work with a blouse, pumps and conservative accessories; dress up for a night out with friends by adding a high heel, trendy top and statement jewelry; dress down with modest pump or flats and a cute cardigan or even a simple fitted t-shirt…
Black Skirt – easy to wear year round and dress up or down; use combinations similar to the black pants; remember to wear tights for warmth and elongation during the cold months; bare legs and cute tops in the warmer months can create a perfect evening out look…
Neutral Blazer/Cardigan – a versatile topper is a must; the cardigan or blazer can be worn to create a more polished look, add it to a pair of jeans to create a business appropriate “jeans day” work ensemble; wear it with pants, a skirt or a dress to win the crowd over when giving an important presentation at work; remember to go with a neutral color and fairly conservative style to get the most wear for your money…
White/Ivory Blouse – again this item can be worn numerous ways, the accompanying bottom, shoes and accessories will determine the purpose of the blouse as a part of the ensemble; unbuttoned and over another shirt/turtleneck, etc…, under a blazer and with pants/skirt when preparing for an interview, critical presentation or important meeting; belt it, wear statement jewelry, tie it at the hip to create a completely different look and feel… endless possibilities…
Conservative Jeans – key word is conservative, stay away from the bedazzled, ripped/torn, skinny trendy jeans (there is a time and place for those…just not with your basics); find a pair that fits and flatters your shape and style; if necessary have them tailored to create that perfect fit; you can dress them up for Jeans day at work by pairing a blazer or cardigan; you can spice them up for a night out with the girls; of course running errands with a cute flat or sneaker and fitted “t” is an option too…
Little Black Dress – a must have staple piece, do not pass go unless you have this item; this too is an extremely versatile item when selected appropriately; dress it up or down, wear it out on the town or to work; add layers of clothing or just go with the simple elegance of the dress; you will only impress with this item when you select the perfect dress cut and made for you…!
